Born in Austria, Gunter is the eldest of four brothers! He specialized in track and field in school winning many awards in Austria and Europe.

In 1983, he began bodybuilding and was best athlete in Austria and Europe from 1986 to 1989, placing 4th at the World Bodybuilding Competition in Belgium in 1987 and also 4th at the World Bodybuilding Competition in Austria in 1988. In 1986, he won the title of NABBA Heavyweight Vice World Champion in Las Vegas, in the US. In 1987, he qualified for Mr. Universe in London
