Bodies of Light is a collection of bodyscapes captured using a Lytro first-generation light field camera.

The camera – its idiosyncrasies as well as its features – lead to experimentation and ultimately to the series Bodies of Light.

All images are captured under the same studio conditions, only the models change. All of the models are volunteers drawn to the project by sample works, an interest in participating in the project and seeing how they themselves are to be revealed.

The final images have been desaturated to adjust for color balance, and vignetted to enhance the ethereal quality of the subject, but little retouching has been done, allowing the bodies to reveal themselves in a way that is unusual in much photography today.

The images are sometimes abstract, sometimes explicit, but tend to be more evocative than suggestive. They demonstrate beauty in even small detail as well as the the whole of the human form.

All of the models in the Bodies of Light library are volunteers who came to the photographer as willing friends, respondents to advertisements placed on social websites, or referred by word of mouth.

Before each session model and photographer discuss the objectives of the shoot: the artist’s intent in doing the work, and the model’s desire to participate, including any goals or limitations. All of the work is model-directed, with the photographer seeking to capture the models’ wishes within the context of his work. Works are as anonymous and as sweet or sensual as requested.

After each session, model and photographer review all of the images, and any that the model does not wish to release are deleted. The model chooses which images they wish to release.

In exchange for their time, each model receives their full catalog of raw released images, as well as a set of final images.
