She held her breath when she could sense them coming. It wasn’t as if she could hear their steps, down here all sound seemed to have stolen away. Rather, it was their mere presence she could forefeel even before she saw them. The Faces remained silent, as if they were anticipating what was going to happen next as much as she did.
Then she could see them. Someone, a figure just as tall as herself, was heading towards her. She was perplexed, hadn’t the Faces told her that “they” were coming? But she waited silently, but with a loudly beating heart, until the figure turned its face towards her and came to a halt.
The recognition came over her like shock wave. Sudden tears streamed down her face, when she looked herself in the eyes, the most familiar of all faces. The gaze that met hers showed every imaginable emotion, but most of all, empathy. “I’m sorry” she whispered and tried to stop her tears, “I’m sorry it had to end, there was just no path left for me.” Her other self showed a warm and comforting smile before responding. “Don’t be sorry. This was your path. You are exactly, where you are supposed to be. We have been waiting for you.” Her voice sounded like a choir of thousands of the same voice. Her own voice.
She blinked several times to sharpen her vision, but the contours of her counterpart kept blurring and flickering. “Who are you?” she managed to ask with a hoarse throat. Her other self smiled again. “We are you. All of you, every version of you at every moment along your path.” And in her dark eyes she suddenly could see a thousand versions of her past self. “Oh”, was all she could whisper, but it was a mere sound of relief, of coming home. Her other selves reached out and took her hand. “We have waited so long for you. You are the last of us. And now we’re finally complete.”
A golden light had appeared behind her. Her reflection gestured her to turn around and walk towards the light. “It is time for us to go now.” She tried to keep up with her other selves, but her legs were shaky. “Where will we go, up or down?” she asked timidly, remembering the Faces’ hints. The light had revealed a door that was carved into the blank wall. Her other selves took in a deep breath, on their face the look of joyful anticipation, as they stood in front of the door. “Don’t you worry”, they responded and together, all of them passed the last door.
