His hands were holding on to hers since she had gone to sleep what seemed eons ago. He tried to remember, but the colour of her eyes had already started to fade in his memory. Her laughing voice was a distant echo in his mind. After the crash, there had been no laughter, only tears. Days turned into weeks turned into months turned into years. It had been difficult to keep the spirit alive through all this time, but in every waking moment he had wished that she would just wake up. In the beginning, he had felt certain that she would return to him any day now, but the passage of time had turned vigorous confidence into distant wishes and silent habits. He slept on her bedside now, drove to the hospital every morning and unfolded his work laptop next to her, held her hands and told her stories from the past until visiting hours were over. He had started to get accustomed to their new everyday life.
But something was in the air tonight. Since he had sat down on his chair close to her bed, he had noticed a strange feeling in his gut, like something was going to happen tonight. He had felt restless and nervous today, the small hospital room seemed even smaller than usual. If he hadn’t known better, he would have sworn that there was a strange new energy in the room, like a foreign force that was looming on the ceiling, emitting sparks over their heads. But he was a rational and analytical man, and she would have laughed and rolled her eyes at him. He caressed her hand to distract and calm himself down, when the neon lamps started flickering.
By now, most people would have started to suspect some supernatural occurrence, but he didn’t even notice the lights. His eyes were widened and in tears, as he pressed the emergency button with one shaking hand. The other hand still held hers, but after years of unrequited touch, her fingers closed around his. His stunned voice echoed through the quiet hallways and the nurses arrived just in time to witness the first look of her, finding her husband’s face drowned in tears of bewilderment and joy.
