The black horse was dripping in sweat. The rider had rushed and tormented it with the lash for hours. Further, further down the path. Faster, faster than lightning. The sun was setting, they were racing through a forest. The trees were golden schemes flying by in a blink of an eye. Sharp pain flashed through the horse’s body, the whip again. But no matter how hard it tried, it couldn’t get any faster. The pain was grubbing into its legs, reaching its spine. The black horse didn’t see or hear anything, all it could feel were its galloping legs and the pain from the lash.
The remaining light from the sunset stole away and the night settled in. The rider was using the spurs and had a firm grip on the reins. The black horse felt the pain searing like a red flash in its head. Further, further, faster, faster. Suddenly, a broken off branch in the way, a scream, and a heavy weight lifted off the horse’s back. Further, further down the path, leaving the forest, racing across a wide and open plane. Only the stars were witnessing the horse’s lonely race. Hour after hour passed by, but the horse was too frightened to stop. What if the pain would get worse?
The sound came back to its ears, when the black horse heard the murmur of the broad river in front of it. There was no way around. With trembling legs and a trembling heart, the black horse came to a halt, awaiting the usual punishment. But the pain wouldn’t come. Disbelieving, the black horse stood on the shore, shivering and steaming, and listened to the rambling flow. An unfamiliar ease spread in its body and mind. When it finally dared to move and make the first autonomous step, the river whispered sweet words to the black horse. They all sounded like ‘liberty’.
